The Day After Christmas

Posted by Justin Shull on December 25th, 2009

There would be no Porta Hedge without the volunteer efforts of the 7,000 Evergreens project. This December 26, 7,000 Evergreens celebrates its second anniversary with a new song by Charlie Green. Please donate your old fake Christmas tree, volunteer, or plant a tree at www.7000evergreens.org

Porta Hedge Partial Wrap for the Holidays

Posted by Justin on December 4th, 2009

The Porta Hedge will take a hiatus from road touring this holiday season. And what better time than now to wrap the Hedge, so that it might partake in the holiday spirit while sited in the deep snows of western Pennsylvania this December.

Although we found early in the Summer Tour that having the Porta Hedge wrapped while traveling at high speeds had adverse effects, it does add a certain element of mystery to the object…

Porta Hedge at Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Posted by Justin on December 3rd, 2009

The Porta Hedge contributed briefly to the holiday cheer in the Oak Grove at Indiana University of Pennsylvania as students prepared for finals and the holiday break. IUP grad student Bifei Cao helped decorate the Hedge with LED Christmas lights and we successfully field tested the Porta Hedge solar system’s capabilities to power Christmas lights in addition to its internal power demands. For a quick look at the benefits of using LED lights, see Gizmodo’s review The Pros and Cons of LED Christmas Lights or the Washington Daily Globe’s LED Christmas: Lights offer holiday glow, energy savings.

Many thanks to Kyle Houser, the gallery director at IUP who brought the Porta Hedge to campus!

Halloween Bumblebees

Posted by Justin on November 1st, 2009

The Porta Hedge stopped over in a small suburb in Syracuse, New York for Halloween this week.  Our hosts served candy to trick-or-treaters from inside the Hedge as parents congregated at its door, asking if we made it as a prop for Halloween.  Highlights include our first Bumblebee visitors and a large inflatable man.

Oasis in Kansas

Posted by Justin Shull on August 4th, 2009

The Oasis in Colby, Kansas is not just a mirage. With a Starbucks, Baskin Robbins, Quiznos and Chester Fried Chicken, the Oasis has everything weary travelers require to break up the lush monotony of corn and sunflower fields.

No Tree Donations at REI

Posted by Justin Shull on August 4th, 2009

Having heard about the man-made brook and aspen grove at Denver’s REI store, we decided to stop in for a visit. The brook and trees were delightful, but the real surprise was on the inside. If you walk through the front doors and turn left, looking up over your left shoulder you will see an excellent selection of artificial evergreen trees! There must be at least a dozen varieties on the mezzanine, but REI was not willing to part with any of the trees, despite our request that they donate one to the Porta Hedge to fill in the bare spots that have developed on our tour.

Cross Continental Milestone

Posted by Justin Shull on July 26th, 2009

Despite our recent vehicular setbacks, yesterday evening the Porta Hedge rolled into downtown San Francisco, thereby reaching an important milestone: a successful transamerican voyage. Many plants travel farther and faster across continents every day, take for example roses and artificial Christmas trees, so one hedge’s transamerican voyage may at first seem insignificant. But in light of the public’s positive reception to a mobile artificial hedge, it is important to know that one could actually travel the distance when required.

Future purveyors of artificial mobile landscapes should take stock in the successful travels of the Porta Hedge.

Branches Break Off of Cell Tower-Trees Too

Posted by Justin Shull on July 24th, 2009

Heading west from Reno to Lake Tahoe we stopped by the Fire Department on Mount Rose Highway to visit a stunted cell phone tower-tree. The firefighter on duty left his dinner on the stove long enough to talk to us about the invasion of  cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) in the local foothills.

The firefighter also showed us the devastating effect hard winds have on the cell phone tower-tree branches.  Apparently, the epoxy resin branches can break off like the branches on living trees.  We were told that a company will come out and replace the broken branches, but we liked the realistic effect of a branch lying on the ground beneath the tower-tree.

Artificial Trees Thrive in the Salt Flats

Posted by Justin Shull on July 21st, 2009

The crew was pleasantly surprised to find a large number of artificial and dead trees planted along I80 in the Bonneville Salt Flats. Among the horticultural efforts were two artificial Christmas trees secured with guy wires in the sand – no we did not plant these trees, but both trees are eligble to contribute to the 7,000 EVERGREENS project.
